Production: Devlog 7

Hello everyone! We've just returned to class after a 2 week 'holiday', and we're excited to show you what we've been working on!

Art Devlog

Because all the assets we needed to make are pretty much done, we started to make some normal maps for our new assets.

We started off with making a pirate ship to at the side of the scene, as well as a chest! We also made some ivy and a mountain to put in the back of the scene, and now its really starting to come together. We have even more assets planned for the coming weeks, so expect the scene to only look much better!

We sat down for a day and did the lighting of the scene properly, I had no idea how to light scenes in Unity, and I am embarrassed to say that I just realized how light-maps work there. But I figured it out and having some baked light really ties everything together - we are sure that the lighting will have to be tweaked further in the future, but this was a nice step! We also added in some more color variation in the foliage and played with the shadows, as well as doing some post processing.

We also made a nice UI for collecting of the sand.

In addition, we also made a few extra props to add to the background like the crates, both round and boxy version, the anchor, the cloth on the ship & the statue attached to the ship.

Programmer devlog:

This week the crab finally got its animation and now walks hapilly sideways. The seagull also got an upgrade: when it picks up a sandwich, it destroys everything in the surroundings, turning any crabs nearby upside down! So make sure you throw your sandwiches close to the other player. Need more tools to defend your turf? Use the RB button on the controller when you are not holding an item to attack with your scissors. Hitting another crab with your scissors will flip them over for a second and make them lose sand and whatever item they are holding. So think carefully before you go take down an opponent's pile of sand!

We implemented some UI that shows the player what item they are holding and how much sand they are carrying. Speaking of items, there now is a shovel that lets you dig 3 to 4 times faster!

We also changed the controls a bit based on the feedback we got. These are the new inputs:

We finally have a Menu! We added a main menu with a few options, a music button for in the future when we implement sounds, and an in game pause menu with the options to resume restart or go back to the main menu!
